Oil Production down 6.7% in First Four Months of 2009

Oil production totalled 39.1 million barrels in the first four months of 2009, down 6.7% (or 2.8 million barrels) relative to the same period of 2008.  The decline is the result of a decrease in production at the Terra Nova field.

Hibernia produced 16.2 million barrels of oil in the January to April 2009 period, relatively on par with the same period of 2008.  The operation is benefiting from a highly successful well work-over program and improved performance from the gas flood area.

Terra Nova produced 11.7 million barrels of oil in the January to April 2009 period, 2.9 million barrels lower than the same period of 2008.  Production was below the previous years level as a result of natural declines.

White Rose produced 11.1 million barrels of oil in the first four months of 2009, an increase of 0.1 million barrels over the same period of 2008.  Production in January 2009 was significantly higher than the previous year due to a maintenance shutdown that occurred in January 2008.  Production in February, March and April was lower than the same months of 2008 because of natural declines.

The Department of Finance's March 2009 forecast projects annual oil production to decrease to 98.5 million barrels, down about 21% over 2008.  Further information on the province's oil and gas industry is available at The Economy 2009. (see Oil and Gas).
