The latest Public and Private Investment (PPI) intentions survey, released in February 2009, indicates about $4.8 billion of planned expenditures for 2009 – representing a 9.4% increase over 2008.
The increase in expected capital spending in 2009 is due to a large increase in construction spending. Construction spending is expected to increase by 15.1% over 2008 while machinery and equipment spending is expected to decline by 5.0%.
On an industry basis, the most significant contributor to the expected rise in investment is a $328.3 million increase in mining and oil and gas extraction spending. Other notable expenditure increases are expected in: public administration, housing, utilities and health care and social assistance.
